Our Hearts' Cry
She was the tiniest baby I’d ever seen, so frail and lifeless. Abandoned at birth, born with HIV/AIDS. Three pounds was all she weighed, and as I held her little hand in mine, I asked the Lord to somehow help Pieter and I to be a voice for the weak and fatherless children in Cambodia. Later that day, as our boys John-Paul and Jordan, Pieter and I climbed onto our antiquated “tuk-tuk” (a makeshift motorcycle with a cart on back with simple benches for seats) and headed home through the hot, dirty, dust-ridden roads, our 11-year-old Jordan quietly spoke out what all of us were feeling, “We’ve got to do something more to help these kids!” As I looked up to give my “Amen” to Jordan’s words, I noticed tears had formed in his little eyes. That was the heart cry of our family as we spent time in Cambodia this summer. “Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy…” Psalm 82: 3
