Summer, 2010 Dear Friends, Summer has finally arrived in the Pacific Northwest! With snow-covered Mount Rainier, the blue ocean, the green hills along the road, and pleasant climate . . . I cannot help thanking the Creator for the beauty of the area in which we live. Since returning from Ukraine in February, I have been researching for and teaching my classes at Faith Evangelical College/Seminary. I have also had the opportunity to preach in several area churches. Although I am not teaching this summer, my mind is inundated with the details of preparing for my upcoming outreach to Africa. October 4-8, I will hold a Pastor's Conference in Gisenyi, Rwanda. The Muslim population expanded rapidly during and after the 1994 genocide because the Muslims were protecting the Tutsis and distancing themselves from the massacre. Unfortunately, many who called themselves Christian were participating in the killings. Overwhelmed by the rapidly increasing influence of the Muslims, the church leaders of Gisenyi have longed to have Western church leaders come to help develop the Gisenyi church leaders for evangelism and ministry. When my representative informed the Gisenyi church leaders of my intention to hold a Pastor's Conference in their city, they shouted Hallelujahs and some had tears of joy. More than 100 pastors expressed their desire to attend the conference. In order to increase the effectiveness of training and decrease the cost thereof, I am planning to limit the number of conference attendees to 35 pastors. Please pray that God will give us discernment to select the right leaders who are capable of reproduction, which will lead to multiplication. Pray also that God will supply the finances for the conference especially as DCMI will provide the conference attendees with lunch and snack. May the Lord renew the spirit of these pastors this week that they may receive a new vision for evangelism and church growth. We are planning to serve the churches and the church leaders of Gisenyi through evangelism and leadership development for the next five to ten years. When the time is right, we would like to hold a city-wide evangelistic campaign to unite the churches for evangelism and discipleship. Would you partner with me in embracing Gisenyi and pray for the salvation of its people? Grace has completed the 4th grade and has been attending summer school at an area Korean church. She gets practice on her school work in the mornings and enjoys fun activities in the afternoon. She is learning to write the Korean alphabet and learning some basic Korean vocabulary. After four years on a very strict diet, we have decided stop the diet and see how she does eating regular food. Needless to say, she has really enjoyed getting reacquainted with some of her favorite foods and has not suffered any ill effects so far. David’s mother has battled health problems this year – extreme weakness, stomach pain, and memory loss. Her condition is currently much better for which we are grateful. We are also extremely thankful to have a caregiver coming in for several hours daily during the week who cooks for mom and helps her with basic household duties. Dad seems to be doing well these days. He enjoys visiting with friends and helping out around the house. Kay is still working at Costco Pharmacy. She has enjoyed getting back into music ministry by singing on the worship team at church and going with a group from our church to minister at a state prison every few months. We have had a number of visitors over the past few months and look forward to a few more in August. Kay and Grace are planning a trip to visit family in Louisiana and friends in Arkansas in early October while David is gone to Africa.
