	07/17/2006 andy huddleston--YWAM pioneer trains YWAMers in support development
	If you haven’t met andy huddleston now is the time to do so. Working with Community Life, Andy, who just celebrated 30 years with Youth With A Mission [YWAM], encourages and teaches under-funded YWAMers how to build a team of supporters for their ministry. On the next three Tuesday nights at the GO center auditorium at 6:30pm Andy and co-leaders John and Jane Ray will be teaching and training staff to build long-term support. These workshops will enable you to realistically plan your support- raising strategy and learn the essentials of raising support. There is no charge. Andy, who came into YWAM with two dollars in his pocket, was born in Gallatin, Tennessee. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and the country until age 14, when he traded his horse, Strawberry, in for a car. He went from canvassing the fields to cruising the streets, becoming part of the 70’s youth culture. These ended up being troubled and rebellious years. Starting engineering college after high school, Andy noticed his mother’s bedroom lights were on until he got home, often after 2 AM. After a visit from his brother, a pastor, the light went off. His brother helped his mom to stop worrying and put Andy in the hands of the Lord. “That got my attention,” he said. “I went to hear my brother speak at church and went down at an altar call rededicating my life to God.” Petitioning God from his bedside, Andy said, “God I believe you can do anything. Tomorrow morning let it be as if I never smoked cigarettes.” The next morning this two-pack-a-day smoker didn’t even have the slightest craving. “It was a miracle,” Andy said. He continued to focus on knowing God. He moved to Wisconsin where this same brother was pioneering a Southern Baptist Church. Andy’s brother discipled him over the next year and a half. “I am the fruit of his discipleship,” Andy said. It was there he met his future wife, Susie, and other radical Christians. He left Wisconsin to attend a Bible college in Tennessee and married Susie. They later returned and joined a fellowship of radical believers and stayed in the area. At church Andy heard about YWAM and a festival called The Spirit in 76 in New Jersey. Without the money to return, Andy, his pregnant wife and one daughter went to the outdoor festival. After hearing Brother Andrew speak, Andy and Susie stood up at the altar call. While still standing Brother Andrew said, “Go into the entire world and preach the gospel and that means you may not come back. This decision will be recorded in heaven and the Lord will hold you accountable.” Around 300 people sat down but Andy and Susie remained standing. “That commitment has been an anchor in my whole Christian commitment,” Andy said. God miraculously provided the money for them to return home where they earnestly sought God for His next step. Susie questioned doing a Discipleship Training School [DTS] until God spoke to her. “Susie, I won’t love you any less if you don’t go, but it will take you much longer to become what I’ve created you to be unless you go.” Together in their hearts Andy and Susie enrolled in a DTS in January, 1977, in Elm Springs, Arkansas. Later they took the School of Evangelism [SOE] and became leaders of both schools. YWAM Arkansas’ focus at that time was Mexico and Central America. They became part of a team that hand delivered over a million New Testament Bibles in Mexico and Central America. Andy’s other love was recruiting new YWAMers for the mission. “I identified with the disciple Andrew who went and got Peter,” Andy said. “That’s what I was doing. I was so sold on YWAM I wanted to involve everyone else also.” His lack of finances brought him to a screeching halt so he started studying God’s word on the subject of finance. He faced the hard questions like, “How am I going to educate my kids, build a house, and cover medical expenses?” Slowly God taught Andy His ways on developing a support team to cover many of their needs. After 18 years, Andy and Susie felt a shifting of grace and knew it was time to move on. He moved his family to Colorado where they worked with Floyd McClung hoping to establish a resident community [Mission Village] for career YWAMers and missionaries. “Colorado was an oasis in the midst of transition,” Andy said. “It was a time of self-discovery and reevaluation.” The move brought new freedom and liberty, a time of fine-tuning and learning how to focus his ministry. Floyd encouraged him to do what he did best. He said, “Go for it. Help YWAMers in their most heart-felt need: raising funds.” While reading Transforming Leadership Andy began to feel God stirring his heart once again. Invitations began to come from Kona to come and help staff with their support needs. He flew over, met leadership, bought a house and within months packed up and moved to Kona in November of 2003. He later published a book called, White Knuckle Faith, to help others grow in faith. Floyd McClung says in the forward of Andy’s book, “andy huddleston has 28 years of experience as a missionary, and he has seven children! They have never once missed a meal, and he has never failed to pay his bills. Andy has authority from personal experience, and he has the faith to go with it. He has seen God come through time and time again.” In Kona, Andy first helped by working on both key areas of corporate funding and staff funding, but his heart was for the individual YWAMer. “I came here with a burden and a sadness of seeing so many experienced YWAMers, young and old, suffer from discouragement because of lack of finances,” Andy said. “My vision is to see staff full of hope and Biblical knowledge on finances which then will allow them to stay in missions for life with adequate provision. “I believe the University of the Nations is having a global influence and in this critical area and will give a new model of support for the emerging generation.” For a taste of the GO Team training attend one or all of the Go Team Workshops. Like cellphone service, missionaries need a team standing behind them, a network of faith in action. No man is an island, which is especially true when it comes to being a traveling teacher, school staffer, or a behind-the-scenes worker. Andy, John and Jane are working tirelessly to disciple students until they develop their own network of prayers, mentors, solution makers, and givers—a GO team. “Look at it in terms of discipleship,” John said. Scripture often talks about people eager to give according to God’s call. Encouraging them to join a GO team is an opportunity to spur on their spiritual development, increasing their faith. When the focus point is the gospel going out, everyone is blessed. Finances should never be the focus, relationships should. Part of the workshop task is to destroy lies centered around poverty mentality. “Your standard of living should be dictated by what you are called to do,” John said. “It should not be dictated by circumstances.” He cautioned, “It’s not about money, it’s not about us, it’s all about following Jesus together as a team.” John described how staffers have left the field because they lost hope that God would provide for their needs. They suffered from poverty mentality and a lack of a strong team around them. John also noted that missionaries in low economic areas are not going to have the same needs as those living in places where the cost of living is high. If God directs the worker to live as the poor people do, that indicates they will do without many things. John cautioned that doing without is not necessarily God’s plan, in particular when workers think they do not deserve full funding. In the Bible, Paul made a decision to avoid the appearance of preaching in order to get their money, so he worked as a tentmaker. Yet other times he appealed directly for support. John asked the students, “Can you get your airline tickets, backpacks, visas, shots, without it being a crisis?” With an adequate GO team, and a clear call, funding needs will be always be met. John and Andy began working together almost 15 years ago after seeing the need to help YWAMers understand God’s perspective on funding ministry. Jane is a professional illustrator and graphic designer and has a passion to help YWAMers communicate clearly.
