The Nations Are Coming to Us
New York is the single most influential city in the U.S. (and perhaps in the world.) In general, as this city goes, so goes U.S. society. We are influenced largely by her media, her arts and entertainment, her financial institutions, and on September 11th 2001 we were influenced by her pain. Then as always, the whole nation responded to that city.
The old distinction between 'home-missions' and 'foreign-missions' is made obsolete by such a global city. In New York you can reach a wide range of cultural and ethnic groups. I hear there are
- More Italians than in Rome - More Irish than in Dublin - More Germans than in Berlin - More Puerto Ricans than in San Juan - One out of every ten Jews in the world lives in NYC.
But in there is a major change taking place in the ethnic makeup, a new wave of immigration coming mainly from the Southern and Eastern hemispheres.
Many of the millions of newcomers to growing cities become far more open to Christianity than they were before arriving. They are more conscious of their needs. Gospel centered churches offer supportive community and a liberating Gospel message.
