Porto Velho, Brazil---deep in the Amazon jungle---is very much in need of clean water. Purified water is expensive and only available to those inside the city limits. This provides a wonderful opportunity for the YWAM base there to make clean drinking water available to those that live in the surrounding jungle.
Hobson Makes a Lid
Part of the tank construction process is to make a lid for the tanks. Here we see Hobson who is 23 and part of the YWAM staff in Porto Velho, gently shaping the curvature on the two meter wide lid. He was quick to learn and very friendly. He wants to show the tank building process to other YWAM locations in Brazil so that others will be able to take this process to the many that are in need.
Lid placed on tank
Near the end of the project, we placed the very heavy lid on top of the tank using a tractor and many hands. All went well and this tank is currently full and being used by many in that area.
Slow Sand Filtration
Another simple option for clean drinking water is to construct a simple, yet effective, sand filter. What you see here is a 36" section of culvert that has been filled with sand, gravel and charcoal. Pour the dirty water in the top and water comes out the bottom dramatically cleaner. This simple devise will change the water quality for hundreds of people in the immediate area and costs only about $20 to construct.
Class graduates!
Meet the smiling faces of the Water Technologies Seminar graduates. These are the ones that worked so hard for two weeks in the sun and rain to complete two 10,000 liter tanks, a sand filter and put gutter on the airpland hangar to collect rain. They are also our new friends:)
