To Uganda!

Jeff, Melissa, Hanna, Reisa, Zarah

Dear friends,
Thank you for your support alongside our family as we love, trust, and follow Jesus’ leadership. You are a blessing to us, and we are grateful!

We are writing this letter to ask if you would prayerfully consider giving prayer and financial support to our family for a three month outreach to Jinja, Uganda. I (Melissa) am a student in the Community Health Development (CHD) course offered here at Youth With A Mission’s (YWAM) University of the Nations. Through this course I am being equipped to promote sustainable health development in communities. Our class has been discussing how worldview affects a community’s values and practices, God’s good intentions for developing communities, maternal and child health, how to train healthcare workers in a local community, and how to write project proposals. In July our team will travel and serve under YWAM in Uganda to put what we have been learning in class into practice. (This is a good site for more information: YWAMUganda) Our family has been blessed, and we desire to be a blessing to the families of Uganda.

On an adventure with Jesus!

Melissa and classmates:)

Financial Situation:
This is an exciting time for us as a family, and we are trusting God to provide the funds for this next step He has for us. Our estimated costs for this 3 month outreach will be as follows:

Airfares—5 X $2300 totaling $11,500

Ground fees (food, housing, ground travel, visas)—5X $1100 totaling $5500. The grand total is $17,000 and we have $5,000 we’ve saved which lowers this total amount to $12,000. WOW! I’m sure glad we have a big God!

Your Response

They are precious in his sight . . .

OUR REQUEST TO YOU: Please pray and ask God if you are to partner with us financially in this. If you are, please be obedient to Him. If God says no, please be obedient in that as well—He has other means to provide for us this time, and we thank you for praying.  Please continue to pray for us between now and the end of September when we return to the states.  Thank you.

If you are to give:

1) Give by check (receive a tax deductible receipt): write it to “UNKF” and mail it to us at: 75-5851 Kuakini Hwy #120, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740.   OR

Where is Uganda?
Uganda in Eastern Africa

Uganda is a small country on the eastern side of the African Continent and is similar in size to the state of South Dakota.  They currently have a population of nearly 31 million people!

Our Girls
Our girls and a potential Christmas Tree??

Our family—You can tell by the picture that all our girls are growing at quite a fast pace!  Hanna—11—loving school and enjoying swim team.  She is amazing to watch in the water and makes it look so easy!  Reisa—8—loves to take dance classes and is often found singing, humming, jumping or dancing about the house.  She brings us great joy.  Zarah—6— is completing kindergarten and loves a good project. She can work for hours designing, gluing, fixing, and painting anything she can get her hands on.  What a joy our three girls are!  We are blessed:)

Water for Life
A sand filter for muddy water

Water for Life—what an exciting past six months it has been!  Last November, your gifts helped me travel deep into the Amazon jungle of Brazil to the city of Porto Velho to teach the Water Technologies Seminar.

There is a group there that wants to learn safe water practices so that their work with the Indian tribes can be used to save lives as well as offer the living water of Jesus.  A simple approach is to construct a “slow-sand filter” that will remove the dirt from the river water and most of the “bugs” that are causing sickness and disease.  A second step is to disinfect the water using solar disinfection simply by putting the water in clear containers in the sun for some hours.  All of these items are inexpensive to them and will last for years to come with only minimal maintenance.  We continue to feel this approach is what God would have us bring to them because it empowers them to work through their water needs without reliance on costly technologies.

Another treat we had this spring was having World Vision send their top water project person to us for a week long training time.  Their projects are well run, and they were excited to have another group willing to learn from their experiences—both successes and failures.  Our desire is to use their assessment tools to plan more effective projects.  Their time with us was full of vision and knowledge to push us forward for years to come!
