The Promised Land Project

YWAM Medellin, a Mercy Ministry of YWAM International (www.ywam.org), has been working with Children At Risk since 1983.  Children that have been abandoned, victims of abuse, orphans and street children are all part our call and passion.  Between the Bethel Boys’ home and the Ebenezer Girls’ home, we have 40 children in our care on average, but many more in our hearts.

Update Dec 12 2009

Dear Friends,

Merry Christmas from Colombia!  Since the last time I wrote we have received new donations and know of several groups that are filling their piggy banks or Christmas Carolling, in Canada the US, Sweden and one group in England!

We even received a donation of 50 Euros from a Missionary family in A Closed Access Country!!  That may not sound like such a large gift to some, but for a XXXXXXXX it is like someone from the US or Europe giving $5,000.00!  They just heard about the need and wanted to help give needy children a home.  We are overwhelmed by their generosity.

Although it is impossible to make an accurate projection of how the fundraising is going until all the money is counted in January, so far we have $4100.00 US in donations pledged towards the farm and the various churches involved could easily raise another $25,000.00 US.

Only $150,000.00 to go!

Would consider a donation this Christmas season, a donation that will give up to 200 orphaned, abandoned and street children a permanent home?

We still need 150 people who could consider a donation of $1000.00 for the farm or 300 people who could give $500.  Some of you may be able to give a larger gift and many of you could consider $100 or $200.

The size of your gift is up to you and God, but if we all do a little bit there will be tremendous joy in Medellin, Colombia this Christmas as our Saviour, through you, gives the greatest gift that a child can have – a permanent loving home.

In Christ’s Unending Grace,

Dear Friends,                                                                                                  September 2009

Christmas is a wonderful time.  It is a time of love, family and the security of knowing that there are people that care for you.  For many children it is a magical time full of life long memories.

Many of our kids have had their dreams shattered.  They come from backgrounds of violence, abandonment and stories too terrible to share here.  However, God has helped us to give them love, we have become their family and we provide education and a safe place to live.

We have taught them that their security comes from a loving God and we celebrate every step in their process of healing.  Still, we long to provide the security of a permanent home, a place that can never be taken away from them.

The Promised Land Project is our way of trying to make that dream come true.  For Christmas 2009 we want to enlist the help of churches, small groups, community organizations and schools in raising funds to buy a farm for our children and the dozens of kids we have waiting for a permanent home.

Our strategy is simple and steeped in tradition.  It is focused on Piggy Banks, Christmas Carols and the strength of people united behind a cause.

Our heartfelt prayer and petition is that you would read the following pages and consider helping us in our quest for the Promised Land.

With Profound Gratitude,

Enith Maria Diaz

Director, YWAM Medellin, Colombia

Our Strategy, Your Challenge

Our Strategy, Your Challenge – Remember when you were a child and you had to save up for weeks and sometimes months for a special toy?  Every time you got your allowance or found a coin, it made its way to your trusty piggy bank.  Treasure built up one day at a time.   We too are looking to our piggy banks or in this case, several thousand of them.

Piggy Banks – they can be soup cans,  potato chip containers, dollar store specials or any container that will hold up to the weight.  Contact your local wholesaler and see what they have.  Starting the first of November, we ask that your Church distribute 10 of them to each family in your congregation.  Then we are asking that each family speak to their friends, neighbours, coworkers and corner stores asking them to help in a project to provide a permanent home for dozens of children in Colombia.  For six weeks those piggy banks will be happy to receive any extra coins (or bills) that come their way.

Remember that they are PIGS.  They like to be fed every day!

Sound too simple…………

The Place

Located 40 minutes outside of the city, this 15 acre (6 hectare) farm is our dream.  With two houses already on site and schools nearby, we can renovate and move our children in quickly.

In addition, to its homes the farm has fruit trees, gardens, a stable to raise goats, pastures for cows and/or horses. A stream running through the property could be used to raise fish. There is room to build more houses and lots of room to run around!

The farm even backs on to a national park with 89,000 acres (36,000 hectares)

of forest and mountains!

Will You Sing For Us?

Christmas Carols Anyone?

Christmas carols are a fading part of the Christmas tradition, but a part that is still looked upon fondly.  How about getting some people together and singing for the children?

Door to door, in the local shopping centre (with permission of course), in front of WalMart or even Home Depot, a sign expressing the project and a bin to receive the donations are the only tools needed for your group to spread Christmas cheer and raise funds for the Promised Land Project at the same time.

Little Bits Add Up!

The week before Christmas the piggy banks can be collected.  Each person, family or business sends his or her Christmas gift for our kids.

Your Church or Group = 50 Families (mid-sized church) x 10 piggy banks per family = 500 piggy banks

500 piggy banks x $30.00 average per piggy bank = $15,000.00

$15,000.00 x 12 churches = $180,000.00

With as little as 12 churches or community groups on board we can purchase the farm!

Your group may be smaller or larger, your piggy banks may average out more or less than $30.00, you may have a only a small group, but the key is to enlist the help of many to accomplish a common goal.  We hope to sign on as many churches, small groups or even schools as possible.  Think what a great project that this would be for your child’s class at school!

The child who brings in the most money wins a prize!  Win an IPOD!  Make it a challenge for your youth group or classroom.  Keep it sane. A group of 30 kids cannot finance a computer, but a Boom Box or IPOD is possible.

The Cost

The initial cost of the farm is approx $180,000 US.   This figure takes into account inflation and currency fluctuations.  To date we have raised $30,000 US, but we hope to maintain this in a reserve fund for renovations and start up costs (equipment, livestock etc.).

Ongoing construction – The initial purchase will allow us to move our children to the farm, but our goal of 200 children is a long-term process.  This goal will be accomplished house by house as we host building teams, continue fundraising and grow our group of loving house parents.  Many groups have already expressed their interest in helping us to build long term.

Got Another Idea?

Share it with us!  These are but two ideas for low investment, high return, outside of the church fundraising.  There must be more and we would love to hear your idea and share it with all of the other groups supporting this project!

A New Year = A New Beginning for our Children

Having collected your piggy banks and sung your hearts out, we ask that by the first week of January you tally your offering and e-mail us the results.  We will be waiting anxiously for the news!  We will then begin the process of closing the deal and purchasing the farm.

You can send in your offering in one of two ways: by deposit or wire transfer to our bank account with the Evangelical Christian Credit Union in the USA or through one of the our partner ministries listed in Appendix A in order to get an official receipt for your records.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read consider taking part in our quest for the Promised Land.

God Bless You!
