School of Early Childhood Education (SECE) EDU 232-236

“We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.” Psalms 78:4

What do you want us to teach young children, Lord?

The School of Early Childhood Education (SECE) was developed as an outgrowth of this prayer. It is a collection of God-inspired principles for training teachers of young children. SECE is a fifteen-month course built upon the DTS and Foundations in Education, which leads to an Associate of Science degree. As a student of the SECE, you will hear God’s heart for young children and their families, learn to use a biblical curriculum that nurture young children in the character of God, and explore the many avenues of are-appropriate learning. Much time is given to observe and participate in a classroom setting. You will also assist in establishing a preschool program in another cultural setting. Most of all, you will develop and grow in you calling as a teacher.

The challenge: laying strong foundations

Throughout history the purpose of education has been to perpetuate and pass on a people’s culture. Many world leaders have known that in order to pass on their values they must start with the children. Educating a young child in God’s ways will pass on His values. As a Spirit-led teacher, equipped with tools given in SECE, you can build a strong foundation in a child’s life… for eternity.

Internship/practicum

Students will have nine months in an early childhood classroom under the supervision of a lead teacher and school staff. During that time, they will put theory into practice as they take responsibility for classroom management, Bible instruction, and creating learning projects. Over the nine months, the students gradually assume more responsibility in the classroom, gaining skills and experience that equip them to become early childhood educators.

Field assignment

Within the context of a cross-cultural setting, students will promote a biblical approach to early childhood education. This is done through conducting seminars or workshops, assisting in an established preschool, or actually helping to start a new preschool program in the assigned field location.
